Mills @ ustwo
Hi Mills! What can you tell us about ustwo?
ustwo™, otherwise known as ‘the studio of dreams’ is a digital design studio based in London and Malmö. ustwo™ was founded by two friends, Mills and Sinx, in 2004. They were shortly joined by a third partner, Marcus, and the three of them started working for Sony on their digital TV interfaces. Through Sony ustwo™ were introduced to Sony Ericsson, who they started working with, and to the world of mobile – they have never looked back since.
The ‘family’ as we like to be known has grown from a humble ‘usTWO’ to 35 creatives who all display the magic ustwo™ ingredient; Profreshion™ (the 3 p’s (kind of) profesionalism, freshness and passion). Its with the 3 p’s that ustwo™ work together to make products smile.. bringing that extra flair to user interfaces (UI) for mobile and other screen based devises. Many mobile companies are developer led, but we set our foundations with a design and UI focus. Building the developer level around this ensures the output is always something people will want to use because it not only functions intelligently, but it also looks amazing. That sounds promising. So when it comes to your iPhone apps, what can you tell us about them?
Our last game, Steppin™ was a graphically rich racing game which took months to develop, to hone and perfect. It’s truly original racing game that recently launched as a full paid version after the ongoing success of 165k lite downloads. Transferring lite users to the paid app is not as easy at it sounds. The free, lite version continues to have 500+ downloads a day, whilst the paid, full version has got a long way to catch up. People will always love a freebie, even if the paid one offers more and only costs $0.99! In terms of time/£ we estimated Steppin™ has cost the studio around 40k (GBP), so it’s looking like we can’t spend this sort of time again on an app!
So, for obvious reasons we had to approach MouthOff™ differently, cost was an issue, time was an issue and we wanted to create something completely different from Steppin™, something frescata!! MouthOff™ was born, a fun and engaging app with mass market appeal. We turned it out from conception to release to Apple in 1 week. The aim was to release the game and then update with further tweaks after it was launched. With Steppin™ we constsanly strove to make it perfect, thus pushing back the release date. In the end each day was costing hundreds of pounds, so we stuck to a game plan, even when ustwobies came up with new ideas, we stuck to our initial plan, allowing us to be the first to the market with a versatile sound reactive mouth app.
To add real value and to keep the ’showusyourmouthoff’ community growing we are inviting new illustrators to create mouthoffs™, and will release these updates monthly… the next stage is to create a real family of designs, one for every occasion!!!
You’ve worked hard on the promotion for MouthOff. What made you decide to make the website that’s connected to MouthOff – showusyourmouthoff?
MouthOff™ needed to innovate, needed to excite and needed to engage with users the very second it left our teat. Without the love of Apple promoting the app (something very few have the privaledge of having) its over to the developer teams to create the buzz. We needed a new spin, a new way to expose the master app. Being a stand alone app wasn’t going to be enough, so we thought about what it was that made the app buzz, and that was the fact that it encourages you to be really silly! As Kevin Costner famously and wisely once said ‘if you build it, they will come’ so we built a website that pulls in all the videos that users upload to YouTube that are tagged with the phrase ’shousyourmouthoff’ – a one stop shop of all the madness you can do with the application. Users create videos of themselves and show off the power of MouthOff™ at the same time.. win/win!! It’s a platform for all the ’showoffs’ out there… In some ways the website is more important and fun than the actual application.
What sort of things have people been recording themselves saying/doing with MouthOff?
We are starting to see a real pickup of the app, after 4 days it has over 100 clips, ranging from wannabee famous person singing to the camera, users pets, Elton John complimenting the app, alongside ‘piss take’ clips of famous internet bloggers spouting nonsense (like Pete Cashmore). Its really a platform to express yourselves. The beauty of MouthOff™ is that even dead-dogs (people who are not much fun) look funny
you can taste the experience here http://iphone.ustwo.co.uk/iphone/apps/showusyourmouthoff.
How does the app technically work? How can MouthOff move in time with my voice?
Every x milliseconds we ask the microphone what’s the current volume level. Then we link the volume level to the corresponding mouth frame. It’s not rocket science, super simple. It’s not meant to be a super polished animated masterpiece, its throw away laughter… an engaging app to have fun with your mates, make a video, ’showusyourmouthoff’, and get it on our site via YouTube.
What other iPhone apps have ustwo™ produced, and what can we expect to see from you guys in the future?
Steppin™ was our first child, and as with all first children we spoiled it rotten, perhaps too much love, so Mouthoff™ was conceived from all our experience of apphood. Our third ustwo™ app is BuzzWire™, which will be another racing/skill game and will utilize al the experience we have gained from the first two. We are also collaborating with the illustrator Jon Burgerman to prodcue a nonsensical doodle app that plays on his quirky but cool illustration style.

What other Swedish developers do you know and what do you think of their work?
Since setting up ustwo’s Swedish sanctuary we have been looking out for local talent, two big names come to mind, TAT (the astonishing tribe) who work hard to pull the design/developer community together and Illusion Labs who its far to say have established themselves as the No1 iphone developers working today.. we love and admire them both.
What are your favorite iPhone apps?
Favourite can mean many things, I love ‘Field Runner‘, it’s a truly addictive game. Im also very much into EDGE which has the best use of sounds on any game I’ve played, simple gameplay but stunning graphics. THINGS is another favorite, no fun involved here but a perfect app for documenting all the ‘things’ I need to do in my life.
What’s the future of iPhone and mobile applications?
We’ve started using the term ‘Generation UX’ to describe today’s mobile and technology users. They’re group that expects more from their products and more from their mobile applications in terms of how much they can individualize and define their own user experiences. So, that’s where we think mobile apps are headed, tying in more with social networking, and allowing users to make their products unique to themselves.
Thanks, and good luck in the future! Looking forward to your new apps.
Thanks!
